Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy (RLT), also known as photobiomodulation (PBM), is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate healing processes in the body and brain. It penetrates the skin and is absorbed by mitochondria (the cell’s energy center), boosting ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, reducing inflammation, and enhancing cellular repair and function.

Mental Health Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Improved Mood

  • Red and near-infrared light may increase serotonin and dopamine production.

  • Enhances mitochondrial function in brain cells, promoting better emotional regulation.

  • Shown to help with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and mild-to-moderate depression.

Reduced Anxiety & Depression

  • Helps regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to lower stress response.

  • Reduces neuroinflammation and supports neural resilience.

  • Transcranial PBM studies show decreased symptoms in patients with depression and anxiety.

Better Sleep

  • Encourages natural melatonin production without suppressing it like blue light does.

  • Balances circadian rhythms, especially when used in the evening.

  • Improved sleep contributes to better emotional health and stress management.

Enhanced Cognitive Function

  • May improve memory, focus, and mental clarity by increasing oxygen delivery to brain tissue.

  • Promotes neurogenesis (the creation of new brain cells) and synaptic plasticity.

  • Helpful in brain fog, age-related cognitive decline, and even traumatic brain injury recovery.

Stress Reduction

  • Users report feeling calm and relaxed post-session.

  • May reduce cortisol levels (stress hormone) and increase parasympathetic nervous activity.

Physical Health Benefits of Red Light Therapy

Reduced Inflammation

  • Decreases oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in tissues.

  • Effective for chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, and inflammatory skin disorders.

Enhanced Muscle Recovery & Performance

  • Increases circulation and cellular energy production in muscles.

  • Speeds up recovery after workouts, reduces DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), and enhances endurance.

Pain Relief

  • Commonly used for arthritis, joint pain, fibromyalgia, and back pain.

  • Works by inhibiting pain-signalling pathways and reducing inflammation.

Improved Skin Health

  • Boosts collagen production, reduces wrinkles, and improves skin tone and texture.

  • Helps treat acne, psoriasis, eczema, and other dermatological issues.

Wound Healing & Tissue Repair

  • Accelerates healing of cuts, burns, surgical wounds, and ulcers.

  • Used in hospitals and clinics for non-healing wounds and post-op recovery.

Hormonal & Metabolic Benefits

  • May support thyroid function (especially in hypothyroidism).

  • Shown to help regulate insulin sensitivity and metabolic function in some studies.

FAQs

What is a red light therapy bed?

A red light therapy bed is a full-body device that emits low-level red and near-infrared light wavelengths. These wavelengths penetrate the skin to help improve cellular function, reduce inflammation, promote healing, and enhance overall wellness.

How does red light therapy work?

Red light therapy stimulates the mitochondria in your cells (the "powerhouses") to produce more energy (ATP). This helps cells repair and regenerate more efficiently, supporting various health and aesthetic benefits.

Is red light therapy safe?

Yes, red light therapy is generally considered safe, non-invasive, and painless. It uses non-ionizing light, which means it does not damage DNA or cause burns when used appropriately.

Does red light therapy help with weight loss?

While red light therapy isn't a standalone weight-loss solution, it may support fat metabolism, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation, which can contribute to body contouring and fat reduction when combined with diet and exercise.

How often should I use a red light therapy bed?

Most users benefit from 2-3 sessions per week initially. After a few weeks, maintenance sessions of 1–2 times per week are usually sufficient. Follow the guidelines provided by our nurses.

How long is a typical session?

Sessions typically last between 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the device and your goals.

What should I wear during a session?

Undergarments are mandatory so that more skin can be exposed to the light.

Is red light therapy FDA-approved?

Certain red light therapy devices are FDA-cleared for specific uses such as wrinkle reduction, pain relief, and acne treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Red light therapy is very low risk. Occasionally, users might experience mild skin tightness, temporary redness, or light sensitivity. These effects are usually short-lived.

Who should not use red light therapy beds?

Red light therapy may not be suitable for:

  • Pregnant women (consult your doctor)

  • People with photosensitivity or certain medical conditions (like epilepsy)

  • Those taking medications that cause light sensitivity

Always discuss options with our nurses in your initial consultation.

How soon will I see results?

Some users notice improvements in energy and skin tone within a few sessions. However, significant results such as pain reduction or skin rejuvenation may take 3 to 8 weeks of consistent use.

Does red light therapy tan your skin?

No, red light therapy does not tan the skin because it does not emit UV rays.
